San Gabriel

San Gabriel

This church is typical of those built at the end of the 15th Century after the conquest of Granada. It has recently undergone a facelift costing several hundred thousand euros so I thought it warranted a photo. San Gabriel is not the principal church in Loja. That is the Iglesia Mayor built on the site of the old mosque . There is also another large church, Santa Catalina, and several ermitas

Almond Blossom – 2

Almond Blossom-2

This is a simple and rather corny photo but I had to post it because, after five days of wet, windy and cold weather, yesterday the sun came out again.
The sweetly scented flowers of the almond blossom, which are now at the peak of their flowering, range in colour from white to deep pink.

Almond Blossom

In late January the almond blossom comes into flower. For us, this is one of the first signs of Spring. I took this photo today in the morning sunshine. The heat of the sun is evaporating the overnight due.

Stony Ground

The day was warm and wet but there was a little sunshine and some interesting skies. Normally my landscape photos are taken on the vega (plain) as I like the variety of trees, crops, the changing colours and the mountain backdrops. This photo though was taken in the hills just to the north of the plain and we see a different landscape although only a short distance away.

Changing Landscape

Changing Landscape

Not so long ago this field was full of ripening maize and the trees in full leaf. There are still some fields with golden asparagus plants but the farmers are now cutting this back and waiting for the new shoots to appear in the spring. A lot of colour has gone from our landscape but I think it still makes an attractive photo and the winter sunshine has a sharp quality to it.

The leaves have fallen off this caqui tree but its fruit (persimmon) has not been picked. They hang like baubles on a Christmas tree waiting to be eaten by the birds.
